Sensing principles

CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) sensors are semiconductor image sensors that convert light into electrical signals.

CMOS image sensors are mixed-signal circuits containing pixels, analog signal processors, analog-to-digital converters, bias generators, timing generators, digital logic and memory (Bigas, et al. 2006).

CMOS image sensors can integrate sensing and processing on the same chip and have higher radiation tolerance than CCDs (Charge-Coupled Devices). In addition CMOS sensors could be produced by a variety of different foundries. This opened the creative flood gates and allowed people all over the world to experiment with CMOS image sensors (Fowler, et al., 2006).
